Re-View uses a great deal of African Mahogany as a wood for its sash and frame parts for our historic window fabrication.
Also referred to as Khaya Ivorensis, African Mahogany is an excellent wood for the use of an exterior window. The species is found in the timber producing areas of West Africa, from the Ivory Coast to Gabon. The trees reach a height of 110 to 140 feet with trunk diameters of up to 6 feet. Since the trees grow relatively straight, the wood is well suited for milling
Since the supply of African Mahogany is abundant, it is a very economical hardwood for the use of custom windows. The color is reported to change from light pinkish-brown when freshly cut to a dark reddish shade. This color variation can cause problems with light interior finishes. Window sash and muntins can display a significant color variation in a single sash if a light clear coat finish is applied. Darker stains will compensate for color variation in the wood and are quite luxurious.
African Mahogany displays excellent durability. It is highly resistant to decay and termite attack, making it an excellent wood for exterior windows.
