RESTORATION - IG CONVERSION

In Northern climates, it is often desired to upgrade the thermal performance of the existing window systems to accommodate the installation of a new HVAC system. In some cases, Re-View uses storm windows to accomplish this, or we can convert the existing single-paned sash to insulated glass.

WINDOW SASH RESTORATION
Before we begin the insulated glass conversion, it is essential that the Re-View craftsmen follow the first six steps of the Nine-Step process for sash restoration. This process results in a fully restored sash that is ready for glazing with a sealed insulated glass unit.

INSULATED GLASS CONVERSION
The Re-View team takes the restored sash and routs out the sash to accommodate the additional space required for insulated glass. In order to hide the steel insulated glass spacer, the Re-View craftsmen rout the depth as well as 3/16th of an inch in width so the glass sits down in the pocket.

GLAZING
You can put any type of glass in the converted sash. The only limitations are due to the width of the original wood sash and the profile of the interior sash sticking. Typically we will use ½" to 5/8" insulated glass in a standard 1 ¾ " sash. We glaze an insulated glass unit with a mahogany glazing bead that is sealed at the ends to prevent water from wicking into the wood. Our glazers apply linseed oil to the glazing pocket to prep it for the glazing. We then use a small bead of silicone to set the glass in for a tight seal around the entire perimeter of the sash. The glazing bead is set in a bead of polyurethane sealant. Re-View can glaze single lite windows as well as true divided lite windows with insulated glass.

WEIGHT REBALANCING
Since we are adding considerable weight to the original sash, the Re-View team will supply additional weight for the weight balanced window units. This is typically accomplished by adding lead or cast weight to the existing steel weights. In some cases, rebalancing may be affected by the height width ratio of the existing units.
