|
| The
Security Building has large double hung windows with 7-1/2 inch
bottom rails. |
Built
in 1891, the Security Building is a cultural asset to the city.
It was designed by the Boston architecture firm of Peabody, Stearns,
and Furber in the Romanesque classic revival style popular at the
time. The architects used Missouri pink granite and red brick for
the U-shaped building. The Security Building is on the National
Register of Historic Buildings. In recent years the building has
been occupied at a little more than half of its capacity. Renovation
includes updating the building to meet fire safety codes, improving
the elevator, and restoring the overall appearance of the building.
Furthermore, the developers are seeking a "green" certification
in which strict environmental codes would be made. In order to do
this, the windows will be glazed to make them airtight, a white
coating will be applied to the roof to deflect heat, while paint,
carpeting, and other materials that are environmentally friendly
will be added. Insulation will also be added to make the building
more energy efficient.
| Re-View manufactured decorative elements like this grille that were beyond repair. | |
Re-View
was contracted to restore all existing wood windows and convert
the sash to insulated glass. All sash were removed and transported
to the Re-View restoration facility to have lead paint removed,
restore the sash, adapt sash for insulated glass, glaze sash and
factory finish the units. Many of the existing windows had to be
replicated to match existing.
|
This LEED project requires Re-View to recycle all of the used
glass and provide certified wood from managed forests.
