Over the years, Re-View has specialized in historic
window hardware. One of the great things about this business is being
exposed to the unique elements of historic windows and the window
hardware that we have run across in the past has to be one of the
most interesting aspects of the work. You cannot find windows manufactured
today with the same character of hardware that was used many decades
ago. We have run across hundreds of unique hardware designs and are
constantly impressed with the design, functionality, and durability
of these originals.

The
team at Re-View has developed proven techniques for taking original
window hardware that no longer functions and restoring it to
its original luster. One of the first things we do when we get
a job is to retrieve all hardware from the windows and catalog
it by unit so we minimize job site theft or damage. |
We then
put the hardware through a three-step restoration process:
1.
FINISH AND OXIDATION REMOVAL
| The
first step is to remove the existing finish. In most cases,
the hardware has been painted several times when the window
was finished over the past 50 to 100 years. It was much easier
to slap a coat of paint on the hardware than to properly restore
it many years ago. Unfortunately, these multiple coats of finish,
incapacitate the hardware and lock all moving parts. Pulleys
that once rotated effortlessly, are fixed in place, locks that
once operated smoothly, are permanently frozen. |
 |
We even
find screws and grommets that hold the sash stop in place to be
painted over so many times they are virtually invisible.
In many
cases, the locking hardware is made of plated steel, which has oxidized
over the years due to condensation on the glass. Although this rust
appears to have ruined the lock and prevents it from operating,
it usually is superficial and can be treated.
Re-View
has a specialized piece of machinery created especially for the
removal of paint and oxidation. The bead blaster blasts very refined
silica sand at the hardware, gently removing paint and oxidation
without causing harm to the substrate. In just minutes, we can remove
decades of deterioration and return the element to its original
state.
2.
REWORK DAMAGED PARTS
The Re-View craftsmen are experienced in all types of hardware and
have rebuilt sections and replaced non-operating parts. We also
lubricate moving parts like pulleys and locks so they operate freely.
3.
APPLICATION OF NEW FINISH
The budget of the project will determine what type of finish the
restored hardware will receive. In the least expensive alternative,
Re-View will apply an automotive clear coat finish to provide a
protective barrier to future oxidation. We also have the capability
to plate the hardware in any number of finishes. In the past we
have plated window hardware in brass, copper, pewter, and antique
brass. There is nothing more attractive than installing a newly
plated set of hardware on a restored window.
