Since 1959, modern glass has been produced by floating the molten glass on top of a ribbon of molten metal to give a uniform thickness and a distortion-free surface. For about 50 years immediately prior to the invention of this float glass method, glass was produced using a machine to draw the glass from its molten state into sheets. This method resulted in some distortion of the surface. Prior to the turn of the last century, glass was generally mouth blown into cylinders and then flattened into sheets by hand. This process produced glass containing various imperfections both within the glass and on its surface. Re-View is still able to source this historic glass that is fabricated to match the imperfections of the glass in old historic windows. There are three different types of historic glass:

HAND BLOWN

Hand blown glass is the most accurate representation of glass produced prior to the turn of the twentieth century because it is produced using the same techniques and materials as the original. It tends to have somewhat irregular imperfections and distortion. Due to the high cost of the requisite skilled labor, this glass can be rather expensive, but it has a character all its own.

Authentic! Hand-made in Europe the way it has been for hundreds of years, this mouth-blown glass is produced by master craftsmen. This glass is a beautiful balance of clarity and movement. It is exactly what you want if your restoration job calls for 100% authenticity when replacing blown glass from the pre-1900’s.

MACHINE DRAWN

Machine drawn restoration window glass is the glass of choice for the restoration of pieces from about 1900-1950. It is also suitable for applications where tempering, size and price considerations preclude the use of hand-blown glass.

A distinctive machine drawn fire polished glass which adds beauty and elegance to any light restoration project where early 1900’s authenticity is required. It features a subtle wave and no seeds or defects.

Available in 1/8" and 3/16" thicknesses this glass can be tempered and comes in large sheet sizes.

ROLLED

Rolled restoration glass is a new entry in the restoration glass genre. This glass boasts a gentle wave, subtle distortion, limited seed content, consistent 1/8" thickness and a uniform sheet size.

Produced in the U.S., this old world style glass will bring distinction to a window, door, sidelite, transom, cabinet or piece of fine furniture. It is suitable for any project whether newly created, renovated or restored. It is perfect if you are looking for a premium glass with only subtle “antique” characteristics at a remarkably affordable price.
